One in 18 patients in European hospitals will acquire infection, says ECDC
The European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) has released its first Europe-wide point prevalence survey on healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial use. The data are published as a report which is also available online as an interactive database. The survey conducted in more than 1000 hospitals in 30 European countries revealed that on any given day, one in 18 patients in European hospitals acquire at least one HAI. The most common types include respiratory tract infections, surgical site infections, urinary tract infections and bloodstream infections, and the most affected individuals are patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). The survey further revealed that at least one in three patients receive at least one antimicrobial agent on any given day in European hospitals. Read full report
